The question is almost always a date. When is my period coming. When will my period start. A square you can plan around. The body does not keep that kind of appointment book. It keeps intervals. Each period start is a mark, and the distance to the next mark is a length that moves.

People want a day
A day is useful. You can put it on a calendar. You can count backward from it. What biology hands you is a distribution of gaps between bleeds. Some cluster. Some wander. It is the ordinary scatter of a cycle assembled from hormones, sleep, illness, and luck.
One remembered start leaves the next interval unknown. Several starts make a small cloud of lengths. The middle of that cloud is a reasonable place to stand. The width is the honest part: close lengths, a narrow window; scattered lengths, a wide one. Hiding the width behind a confident morning is how a planner gets you to trust a fiction.
The fair answer to “when is my period coming” is: given the starts you logged, bleeding has usually begun in this span of days. Not a secret sensor. Not a forecast from someone else’s diagram. Your history, projected forward, with the scatter left visible.
Twenty-eight is a habit, not a law
Twenty-eight days is a round number that fits a month-shaped calendar. It is easy to count. It is what many of us were told in a classroom. It is not a law of the body. Cycle length is the gap from one period start to the next. For a lot of people that gap lives in the mid-twenties to early thirties. For others it does not. The textbook figure became a habit, then a default in calendars that never look at what you logged.
Count twenty-eight squares from a bleed and you will sometimes land near the next one. You will also land early or late, then blame the body instead of the ruler. A ruler that never updates is not measuring you. It is repeating a story.
A cycle is not one timer. It is two waits glued together. Before ovulation, the follicle has to grow; that wait, the follicular phase, is the stretchy one. After ovulation, the luteal phase is, for many people, more stable — a shorter wait until bleeding if pregnancy does not begin. You do not usually see ovulation from bleeding alone. You see the starts. The noisy part of “when will my period start” is often that unobserved middle: whether ovulation came on a similar day, or later.
That is why a 28-day grid feels precise and still misses. It assumes both waits were typical. It has no place to put a late ovulation, a short cycle after a hard month, or a long one after travel. It cannot learn.
One late cycle should move the guess
If last month ran long, the next estimate should not pretend it did not. A frozen average from years ago, or a printed 28, should not outvote the interval you just lived. Recent lengths still describe this body in this season. One early cycle and one late cycle are data. They pull the typical interval. They should also widen the window, because the cloud just got more spread out.
The mechanism is small. You mark the day bleeding began. You measure the gaps. You take a typical recent gap — a mean or a median, it does not need a brand name — and add it to the last start. That sum is a point. Around it you draw a range that grows when the gaps disagree and shrinks when they rhyme. When the next bleed starts, you fold that length in and do it again.
A late cycle that does not move the guess is inertia, not caution. The opposite error is treating one odd month as a new law. Weight the recent past without erasing everything.
Stress, a fever, a long flight, a new hormonal method, the months after a birth, the years around perimenopause — ordinary reasons the next gap will not match the last average. Name them as weather, not as a protocol. They are why the estimate is allowed to miss the morning and still be useful about the week.
What tracking can and cannot tell you
Tracking can tell you the pattern of starts you have already had. It can show that your typical interval is thirty-one days, or twenty-six. It can keep you from counting twenty-eight out of habit, and put a window on a calendar so the question has somewhere to land besides memory.
It cannot see hormones. It cannot watch a follicle. It cannot promise the next bleed will match the last average. It cannot turn a window into certainty. A log is a record of events that already happened. The next start is not one of them yet. Missing starts mean nothing to project. Few starts mean a wide window. That is a short sample, not a defect in you.
The useful test of any tracker is whether the picture moves when the history moves. Three longer cycles and a highlight still parked on a textbook 28 is a prettier paper calendar. A window that widens when lengths scatter is an estimate trying to be honest.
How to know when your period is coming is a modest skill: keep the starts, project a typical gap, leave room around the day you wish you could have. The wish for a single square is understandable. The body will keep handing you a range. An honest calendar shows both.
