Leaving a period app is usually about one quiet preference: where your cycle, sex, and contraception notes live. Clue is a well-known tracker with an account-based online service. Lua is a privacy-first iOS alternative built so those logs never leave your phone.
Why switch from Clue to a private period tracker
Clue requires an account — username, email, and password. Clue exists only as an online service. Health data is hosted on AWS in Ireland and Germany under GDPR, with local copies on the device and server copies in the cloud. Clue says it does not sell data to ad networks. Braze processes some tracked health data for notifications (not optional). Datadog is likewise not optional. Research, analytics, and advertising have optional toggles.
That is more transparent than many peers, and EU hosting is real. It is still not local-only. Health logs leave the phone for Clue’s servers.
Lua takes a different path. There is no Lua account. There is no Lua server for health logs. Bleeding, sex, symptoms, mood, contraception, and pregnancy entries stay in private storage on your iPhone. No ads, no ad IDs, no crash reporters, and no health-usage analytics in the app.

Clue vs Lua: what actually differs

Lua+ in the US is $7.99 a month or $49.99 a year, billed by Apple. Tracking stays free either way.
What else Lua does differently
Local reminders. If you use Lua+, method reminders are scheduled on the device. They still fire in airplane mode. There is no push server and no push token for those clocks.
Optional Face ID. A biometric lock can gate the screen. iOS checks the face or fingerprint; Lua never sees it. That lock is not a second encryption layer on the file — your iPhone’s device encryption is what protects on-disk storage when you have a passcode.
Optional Apple Health, menstrual flow only. Off by default. If you turn it on, Lua can import up to the last 12 months of period entries and write periods you log back. Symptoms, sex, contraception, and pregnancy are never written to Health.

How to switch from Clue to Lua
There is no CSV import from Clue into Lua. The move is deliberate and short.
- Decide to leave Clue. Export or screenshot anything in Clue you want as a personal reference. Lua will not pull Clue’s cloud history.
- Install Lua from the App Store. Open it and start logging. No account, no email.
- Optional: Apple Health menstrual-flow import. In Lua, turn on Apple Health if you want. It can bring in up to 12 months of period flow that Health already holds. The toggle is off by default.
- Re-log what Health does not cover. Symptoms, sex, mood, contraception details, and older notes that never lived in Health need to be entered again — or left behind, if you prefer a clean start.
- Set method reminders if you want Lua+. Pill, ring, patch, shot, IUD, and implant reminders sit in the paid layer. Free logging of bleeding, sex, symptoms, and mood does not require it.

Does Clue require an account?

Will switching delete my old app data?
Installing Lua does not touch your old app. What happens to that account, export, or deletion is their process — follow their settings and support if you want that history removed from their side.
Can I import my history into Lua?
Not as a CSV or account sync from your old app. The supported path is optional Apple Health import for menstrual flow only (up to 12 months, off by default), then re-logging anything else you still want.
Is Lua free?
Lua is free to download, with no ads. Tracking your cycle, contraception, sex life, and pregnancy on your phone is included. Lua+ is optional: it unlocks reminders for every method and full cycle stats, billed by Apple as a monthly or yearly subscription (the yearly plan may include a free trial).
