Most apps that support trying to conceive show you a “fertile window”: a handful of days highlighted on a calendar, usually with language like “best days to try.” It looks precise. It’s worth understanding exactly what it is and isn’t, because the gap between the two causes a lot of unnecessary stress.

What the estimate is built from

An egg lives for roughly 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to about five days. Put those together and the practical fertile window (the days when sex can actually lead to pregnancy) is roughly the five days before ovulation through the day of ovulation itself. That’s the biology, and it doesn’t move.

What moves is when ovulation happens, and that’s the part apps are estimating, not measuring. The most common method is counting backward: ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before your next period starts, so an app looks at your recent cycle lengths, estimates when your next period is likely to begin, and counts back from there.

This works reasonably well for people with regular cycles. It works less well for anyone whose cycles vary, and cycle length naturally varies more than most people expect, even for people who’d describe their own cycles as “regular.”

Why the window is a window, not a date

A statistical estimate from your cycle history can tell you when ovulation is likely. It can’t tell you when it will happen this cycle, because ovulation timing shifts with stress, illness, travel, and plenty of cycles for no identifiable reason at all. That’s exactly why the estimate is presented as a range of days rather than a single date: the range is the honest answer, and a single predicted date would be manufacturing precision the underlying data doesn’t have.

This is also why calendar-based estimates are one input, not the whole picture. Other signals (basal body temperature, cervical mucus changes, ovulation predictor kits that detect the LH surge) measure something closer to what’s actually happening in your body that cycle, rather than inferring it from past cycles. If conceiving is a priority, combining a calendar estimate with one of these physical signals gives you a meaningfully better picture than the calendar alone.

What actually helps, practically

Don’t aim for a single day. Given the five-to-six day practical window, spacing intercourse every 1 to 2 days across the estimated fertile window is generally more effective than trying to hit one specific predicted date. Partly because the estimate has uncertainty, and partly because sperm survival means you don’t need same-day timing to succeed.

Track more than just cycle length. Symptoms, mood, and any physical signals you’re monitoring give you a fuller history to work from, and make patterns easier to spot over several cycles rather than guessing from one.

Give it real time before troubleshooting. For couples under 35 with no known fertility factors, it commonly takes up to a year of regular, unprotected intercourse to conceive. That’s a stat worth holding onto, because the “why isn’t this working yet” spiral usually starts well before it’s actually warranted. If you’re over 35, or there’s a known reason to check sooner, a shorter timeline for talking to a doctor is reasonable. That’s a conversation for your own provider, not a blog post.

Keep the tracking light. There’s a real tension in trying-to-conceive tracking between “useful data” and “obsessive monitoring that makes every day of your cycle feel loaded.” Log what’s genuinely useful to you (cycle dates, relevant symptoms, sex) and resist the urge to turn it into a second job.
